Shrimp Fly



The following is a step-by-step photgraphic sequence of the tying of the Shrimp Fly


Materials for Original Pattern

  • Hook: Steelhead/Salmon Size 2-6
  • Thread: Black
  • Tag: Silver Tinsel
  • Body: Orange Dubbing
  • Hackle: Orange and Red Schalpen palmered over body
  • Step #1

    The Hook securely in vise
    Step #2

    Lay down thread base and tie in Tag and Ribbing Material
    Step #3

    Tie in Hackle Material
    Step #4

    Dub thread and build body to the hook eye.
    Step #5

    Wrap forward the ribbing and tie down
    Step #6

    Wrap forward the hackle, tied down, whip finish.


    Here is a different color combination using a pink body, orange and pink hackle.

    Final Thoughts: A very simple pattern with a variety of color combinations possible. Use peach, salmon, pink, orange or red body materials - dubbing or chenille. You can also mix and match the hackle colors to match your local river preferences. I think a couple turns of guinea - dyed or natural - would be a nice touch. Dumbell eyes tied in at the head may be functional as well to get this fly down deep and look nice as well.
