In August of 1998, WVI began offering 56 KB dialup access from the Stayton POP using K56flex technology
from Rockwell. In early September 1998, we upgraded to Rockwell's V.90 version of the "standard" 56K
technology. (I use the term "standard" loosely because there are still some variations to the standard being used by
modem manufacturers.)
As updates to the software and firmware have been made available by Lucent/Livingston (our terminal server manufacturer),
we have applied them to our equipment. An update was released in late September that we applied to both the Stayton and
Salem terminal servers. The most recent update was applied earlier this week (January 25th) to both locations as well.
The following issues were addressed in this upgrade:
Note: Lucent / Livingston Terminal Servers support both Rockwell K56flex and Rockwell V.90 technology.
Even though this upgrade improved performance and connection speeds overall, it has caused problems
for some of our customers. It is extremely important that customers make sure that they are using
the latest software drivers and firmware versions in their modems. Advancements in 56 KB technology
are occurring very rapidly. New releases are coming out every couple of months. These upgrades are
required to ensure that successful - high speed connections are obtained.
A great resource for 56 KB modem technology is available on the web at: www.56k.com.
It contains valuable information about 56 Kb modems, how to find and install the latest software drivers and
firmware releases, how to select a 56 KB modem, how to test your modem, problem solving suggestions and more.
They also provide links to most major manufacturer web sites so that you can download and install any updates required.
